There is something special about September in Fairfield County. Summer isn’t quite over, but there’s a hint of fall in the air. The beaches are quieter, mornings are a little cooler, school is back in session, and our towns begin filling their calendars with festivals, markets and all the activities that make fall in Connecticut so much fun.
As someone who has lived in Fairfield County for much of my life and works throughout the area, September is one of my favorite times of year. Whether you’re new to the area, considering a move, or have called Fairfield County home for years, here are a few ways to make the most of the month.
Enjoy the Last Days of Summer on the Sound
Don’t put away the beach bag just yet! September can bring some of the most beautiful days of the year along the Connecticut shoreline.
Take a walk along Compo Beach in Westport, spend an afternoon at Greenwich Point, or head to the water in Fairfield for an evening stroll. With fewer summer crowds and gorgeous late-summer sunsets, this is one of the best times to appreciate living along Long Island Sound.
Boating, paddleboarding, kayaking and waterfront dining can all still be part of the September agenda.
Visit a Local Farmers Market
September is peak season for so much Connecticut-grown produce, making our local farmers markets especially good this time of year.
The Westport Farmers’ Market is always a favorite, with local produce, baked goods, prepared foods and specialty vendors. You’ll also find wonderful markets and farm stands throughout Greenwich, New Canaan, Fairfield and the surrounding towns.
Pick up apples, late-summer tomatoes, flowers and seasonal produce for an easy farm-to-table dinner at home.
Go Apple Picking
September means the beginning of one of New England’s quintessential fall traditions: apple picking.
Fairfield County and the surrounding Connecticut countryside offer plenty of orchards where you can spend an afternoon picking apples, enjoying cider and doughnuts, and taking in the changing landscape.
Silverman’s Farm in Easton is a longtime local favorite, while a short drive north opens up even more options for orchards and farms.
And yes, warm apple cider doughnuts absolutely count as a reason to go.
Explore Downtown Greenwich
September is a beautiful time to spend a day in Greenwich. Start with shopping and lunch along Greenwich Avenue, visit the Bruce Museum, and then head toward the waterfront.
Having grown up in Greenwich and lived there for much of my life, I may be a little partial, but I love how the town combines the energy and sophistication of a larger city with beautiful residential neighborhoods, parks and coastline.
Make an evening of it with dinner overlooking the water before heading home.
Spend a Day in Westport
Downtown Westport is especially enjoyable in September. Browse the shops along Main Street, grab lunch or coffee, walk along the Saugatuck River, and see what’s happening at the Westport Country Playhouse or MoCA Westport.
You can finish the day with dinner in Saugatuck or along the river—and if the weather cooperates, definitely request a table outside.
Take a Drive Through Weston & Wilton
Sometimes the best September activity doesn’t require a reservation or ticket.
Take a drive through Weston and Wilton, where winding roads, stone walls, historic homes and wooded properties begin transitioning into fall. Stop at a local farm stand, take a walk at one of the area’s preserves, or simply enjoy a quieter side of Fairfield County.
It’s also a wonderful time to explore these communities if you’re thinking about making a move. You get a real sense of their natural beauty before peak foliage arrives in October.
Make Time for a Fall Festival
September kicks off festival season throughout Fairfield County. Our towns come alive with arts and crafts fairs, food events, outdoor concerts, family activities and community celebrations.
Event schedules change from year to year, so I always recommend checking your town’s calendar and local organizations for the latest weekend happenings.
Dine Outside While You Still Can

Fairfield County has an incredible dining scene, and September often gives us that perfect combination of warm afternoons and cooler evenings. Greenwich, Westport, Fairfield, Southport, Rowayton and Stamford all have wonderful options for waterfront or outdoor dining.
It’s one of those small lifestyle perks that makes living here so special.
Start Watching the Fall Real Estate Market
September also marks an important transition in Fairfield County real estate.
After the traditionally quieter weeks of August, new inventory often begins appearing after Labor Day as sellers who waited out the summer bring their homes to market. Buyers also tend to refocus once vacations end and school-year routines return.
For buyers, that can mean new opportunities. For homeowners considering selling, September can offer a valuable window before the holiday season—particularly when a home is priced and marketed correctly from the start.
Every town and price point behaves differently, however, so looking at hyperlocal data is far more useful than relying on national headlines.
Why I Love September in Fairfield County
September gives us a little bit of everything: beach days and apple picking, outdoor dinners and crisp mornings, farmers markets and the first signs of fall foliage.
It’s also a reminder that real estate is about so much more than the house itself. Where you live shapes how you live. The beaches, schools, restaurants, parks, neighborhoods, cultural attractions and sense of community are all part of what makes Fairfield County such a special place to call home.
